Development

After finishing my Master at the University of Leiden, I attempted to acquire funding for a PhD trajectory by writing a proposal focusing on Virtual Reality. When the proposal unfortunately did not get accepted, I decided to gain experience in Virtual Reality - specifically the development side - while applying for PhD positions whenever something interesting came up. This page shows the projects I've undertaken in development ever since, from personal to professional ones.

A Virtual Reality (VR) experience developed for the healthcare organization Ipse de Bruggen, Caretaker VR was designed to help train care workers in dealing with patients that face trouble understanding certain situations and communicating such issues to others. Made by WeMakeVR. Developed by Nesse van der Meer.

In order to help their care workers, Ipse de Bruggen asked WeMakeVR to produce a live-action 360° Virtual Reality experience that allows users to better understand the difficulties that patients with aphasia experience on a daily basis. After recording of the video was finished, I developed the functionality of the Caretaker Training VR experience.

A Virtual Reality (VR) video-player developed for the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, for their "Longing for Mecca" exhibition that showed the New York Times’ 360° film "Pilgrimage: A 21st Century Journey Through Mecca and Medina". Made by WeMakeVR. Developed by Nesse van der Meer.

When the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam asked WeMakeVR to provide a Virtual Reality video-player for a 360° movie by the New York Times, I developed not just a video-player, but a template / plug-in for the Unity game engine for potential future video-players with additional features.

A Virtual Reality (VR) video game called "Rock-a-Blok" (eventually re-titled "Rock A Block"), inspired by games such as Jenga and Tetris, in which players try to build as high as they can using massive blocks. Made by WeMakeVR. Developed by Nesse van der Meer.

A mixture of physical games such as Jenga and digital games such as Tetris, Rock-A-Blok was a Virtual Reality video game prototype that I developed during my time as a developer at WeMakeVR. After my time as a developer at WeMakeVR had ended, Rock-A-Blok was eventually released on Virtual Reality devices in a new, more refined form.

A Virtual Reality (VR) experience that was part of the "Solipmission" art project, a collaboration between Dutch artist Dadara and WeMakeVR. The VR experience was a multi-user experience that allowed three people to simultaneously experience a virtual recreation of an art exhibition presented at Burning Man 2017. Made by WeMakeVR. Developed by Nesse van der Meer.

Together with Dutch artist Dadara, WeMakeVR travelled to the Burning Man Festival in 2017 as part of the "Solipmission" art installation.

I developed a multi-user Virtual Reality experience that offers a virtual representation of the original installation. The experience premiered at 2018's Amsterdam Dance Event.

A Virtual Reality (VR) experience / application, the "Interactive Room VR" is an interactive, virtual showroom and environment that provides different types of interactions with the virtual world, intended to showcase possible applications with the HTC Vive Focus mobile Virtual Reality device. Made by WeMakeVR. Developed by Nesse van der Meer.

Interactive Room VR is an interactive, virtual showroom that I developed during my time at WeMakeVR.

The environment provides different types of interactions, intended to showcase possible applications with the (then recently introduced) HTC Vive Focus mobile Virtual Reality device.

A Virtual Reality (VR) experience and multiplayer game titled "Talk2Me" ("talk to me"), intended to help specific target audiences develop their communicative, collaborative and observational skills. Made by WeMakeVR. Developed by Nesse van der Meer.

Talk2Me is a cinematic, live-action Virtual Reality experience and multiplayer game, intended to help improve soft skills (e.g. collaborative, communicative and observational) of certain members of society.

I was the sole developer of this project at WeMakeVR, focusing on the gameplay and networking components, among other things.

A Virtual Reality (VR) experience intended to induce regulated social anger in users, as part of a project titled "Anger Induction". Developed by Nesse van der Meer and Pieter Rohrbach. Featuring a character owned by Adobe and presented on Mixamo.

During my Master's at the University of Leiden, fellow student Pieter Rohrbach and I were asked to develop a Virtual Reality application with a very specific goal: to induce social anger.

Project "Anger Induction" was extremely educational for me, as I learned not just to develop a VR experience in the Unity engine, but also how to conceptualize and design such an experience.
